What to wear to a wedding as a guest

A wedding invitation is a lovely thing to receive, but it often comes with the question of what to wear. These simple guidelines will help you choose an outfit that feels right for the day and respectful of the couple.

Check the dress code

Start with the invitation. Black tie usually means a floor-length or elegant evening dress, while formal or morning dress suggests a smart dress, a tailored suit or a dress with a jacket. If no dress code is given, it is safest to dress slightly more formally than you might otherwise.

Avoid anything that could look bridal

White, ivory and very pale cream are best left to the bride unless the couple have said otherwise. If you are attending a cultural or religious ceremony, it is worth asking whether there are any colours or levels of coverage that are expected or best avoided.

Dress for the venue and the British weather

Outdoor ceremonies and garden receptions call for shoes that will not sink into the lawn, so a block heel or an elegant flat is often a better choice than a stiletto. A light jacket, coat or wrap is useful at almost any time of year, especially once the evening cools.

Hats and fascinators

Hats and fascinators are a traditional choice for many daytime weddings in the UK. If you choose one, keep it in proportion to your outfit and consider guests seated behind you during the ceremony.

Plan for a long day

Weddings often run from late morning until midnight. Choose a fabric that will not crease too readily, a length you can sit and dance in comfortably, and pack a pair of spare shoes if you expect to be on your feet.

Order in good time

Allow time for delivery and for trying your outfit on with your accessories. Our orders are usually processed within 2–3 business days and then typically arrive within 4–7 business days.
