Woman in a navy pinstripe three-piece trouser suit

How to wear a women's trouser suit

A well-chosen trouser suit is one of the most versatile pieces in a wardrobe. It works for the office, for interviews and presentations, and, in the right colour and fabric, for weddings and celebrations too. Here is how to make the most of one.

Get the fit right

  • Shoulders: the shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, without pulling or overhanging.
  • Jacket: it should fasten without pulling across the front, and you should be able to raise your arms comfortably.
  • Sleeves: they usually look best ending around the wrist bone, so a little of your blouse cuff or wrist shows.
  • Trousers: check the length while wearing the shoes you plan to wear with the suit, as heels and flats change how the hem falls.

Two-piece or three-piece?

A two-piece suit is simple and easy to wear. A three-piece adds a waistcoat, which gives a more polished look and can be worn on its own with the trousers when the jacket comes off.

For the working week

Pair your suit with a tucked-in blouse, a fine-knit jumper or a simple top. Loafers, low block heels or court shoes keep the look smart and comfortable for a full day.

For occasions and weddings

A suit in a rich colour, such as royal blue or burgundy, or in a textured fabric such as jacquard or velvet, makes an elegant alternative to a dress. Add a silky camisole, statement earrings and heels. If you are considering a white or ivory suit for a wedding, check first that the couple are happy with it.

Wear the pieces separately

Get more wear from your suit by splitting it up. The blazer works over a dress or with jeans, and the trousers pair well with knitwear or a simple shirt.

Caring for your suit

Always follow the care label. Hang your jacket on a shaped hanger to support the shoulders, and let the suit rest between wears so the fabric can recover.
