How to choose a mother of the bride outfit
Share
Choosing an outfit as the mother of the bride or groom is about more than finding a dress you love. You will be in many of the photographs, greeting guests and on your feet for most of the day, so it helps to think about colour, comfort and practicality as well as style.
Start with the couple
Before you shop, ask the couple about the colour scheme, the level of formality and anything they would particularly like or prefer to avoid. It is also a thoughtful gesture to share your choice with the other parent, so that your outfits complement each other rather than clash in the photographs.
Think about the venue and the season
A summer garden wedding suits lighter fabrics, such as lace or chiffon, and softer colours. A winter ceremony or an evening reception is a good excuse for richer textures such as jacquard and brocade, longer sleeves or a matching coat. If the ceremony is in a church, consider whether you would like your shoulders covered.
Choose a colour that complements
Unless the couple have said otherwise, it is usual to avoid white, ivory and cream. Soft pastels, navy, champagne and jewel tones all photograph well. If you know the bridesmaids' colours, choose something that sits comfortably alongside them without matching exactly.
Consider length and silhouette
Knee-length, tea-length and midi dresses are all popular choices. An A-line shape is comfortable to sit and move in, while a structured or peplum style gives a polished outline. Think about what you feel most confident wearing for a full day.
A dress or a dress suit?
A dress with a matching coat or jacket is a practical option. You can keep the coat on for the ceremony and photographs, then remove it for the meal and dancing, or keep it to hand if the weather turns.
Plan for comfort
Try your outfit on with the shoes and underwear you intend to wear. Sit down, walk around and raise your arms to make sure you can move easily. Shoes you can stand in for several hours are worth their weight in gold.
Leave plenty of time
Order in good time so that there is room for delivery and, if needed, a return. Our orders are usually processed within 2–3 business days and then typically arrive within 4–7 business days.
